Object: 17 - Giordano Bruno... Crater
Date Observed: 11/8/11
Comments: This target was sought on numerous occasions, and I now state that it
is unobservable. To wit:
1. It is located about 8 degrees on the far side
of the moon. The maximum libration that can be expected is about 8 degrees.
2. It is not listed as an observable target on any published lunar atlas that I
can find imprint or online.
3. A modeling done using LTVT indicates “: that the center of the crater reaches
the limb visible from Earth (that is, a distance from disk center of less than
90°) only during the most extreme librations -- one instance occurring in 2003
and another expected in 2021 -- and even then the bulk of the crater is hidden
from view by a largely unrelated ridge on its Earthward side.”
4. No one on Cloudy Nights has been able to locate a photograph of Giordano
Bruno taken from earth.
5. None of the present NexStar Lunar Experts can report definitively seeing GB.
Douglas E. Johnson comes the closest. At least two others were awards
certificates in spite of openly saying they could not observe it.
6. The projections from the NightCal program indicate that there will be no
librations in the region of GB of more than 2 degrees in 2012. Hence it will be
unobservable for the next year.
In conclusion, I believe this object, which at
best, may be viewed once every 17 years, was placed in the NexStar Lunar list in
order to determine the honesty of the reported observations. In light of the
above evidence, I claim my NexStar Lunar Expert Certificate.
